The Tucson City Council has authorized suing the builder and/or architect for the Martin Luther King Jr. Apartments renovation over more than $1 million in defective flooring installed at the downtown public housing complex.
City Attorney Mike Rankin said the city believes the crumbling floor tiles, installed as part of a $23 million renovation two years ago, are the result of both a design flaw by the architect and faulty installation by the contractor.
He said although the city has tried to reach a settlement and keep the issue out of court, no one wants to take responsibility for the $1 million-plus mistake.
