A November start date is planned for construction of a 24-hour, 32-bed, 16KSF senior behavioral hospital in Surprise.
The site is north of the NEC of North Parkwood Place and West Paradise Lane in an existing medical campus in the Stadium Village area.
According to documents filed with the city, Surprise Behavioral Hospital “will provide comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for individuals over the age of 55 who are experiencing psychological, emotional behaviors or cognitive symptoms that are putting themselves at risk or to others.” Services will focus on patients experiencing behavioral episodes beyond the care capabilities of home-based or assisted living/memory care providers.
The facility’s design is intended to tie in with other buildings on the campus. A combination of stone and stucco finishes with metal awnings and decorative architectural elements are intended create a strong sense of aesthetics and contributed to a connected environment, according to the planning staff report. The hospital’s three outdoor courtyard areas will have non-climbable nine-foot decorative walls to combine visual appeal and security.
An all-ages psychiatric facility – Destiny Springs Behavioral Health Hospital – started construction in Surprise this summer and is scheduled for completion in fall, 2018. A news report earlier this year quoted developers of that project as saying Surprise and the greater Phoenix area have a significant unmet demand for behavioral health services and facilities, which will continue to create growth opportunities for providers.
The Avenir Group (Avenir Senior Living) is Surprise Behavioral Hospital’s owner/developer and will also fulfill the general contractor role for construction. Design is by PSWC Architects, and Grading and Drainage Engineers, Inc., is handling civil engineering duties.
