Phoenix will pay an additional $125K for study renovations to the Talking Stick Resort Arena despite council members’ concerns they haven’t received a report on the topic in more than nine months.
In February, the City Council voted to pay Barrett Sports Group, a sports-business consultant, $75K to study the feasibility and cost of a renovation to the arena.
Council members indicated that they have not yet seen a report on renovation costs from the consultant, despite multiple requests. But they voted 7-2 to extend the contract for another year – and another $125K.
Multiple council members indicated they had expected a written outline of potential costs, which — if completed — has not been provided to council.
Councilman Sal DiCiccio said he’d heard a report produced by either Barrett Sports Group or the Suns is already in city staff’s possession but has not been provided to the council.
DiCiccio asked city staff to present all the information Barrett Sports Group has collected thus far, as well as cost estimates for everything from essential fixes, such as the plumbing, to a potential full renovation of the arena.
City Manager Ed Zuercher took responsibility for any lack of communication between the consultant and the council and agreed to fulfill DiCiccio’s request.
