The Phoenix City Council on Wednesday approved an acceleration plan for the leg of Metro light rail that would extend the northwestern end of the line and get it running seven years earlier than expected.
The 3.2 miles of light rail along 19th Avenue between Montebello Avenue and Dunlap Road is slated to now be operational by 2016.
Phoenix will advance $60 million to Valley Metro, which operates the rail. The city will be reimbursed by 2017.
Mayor Greg Stanton said Phoenix could not be a great city without a good public-transit system. He said the light rail is the “backbone” of that system.
Valley Metro has planned other extensions of the system, including in Mesa, where the rail will extend through the downtown area along Main Street from its current eastern terminus at Dobson Road.
