A $21M renovation project will transform the vacant Macy’s store in Fiesta Mall into an office building called Fiesta Corporate Campus. The general contractor is Phoenix-based Wespac Construction Inc.
Archicon Architecture & Interiors will do the design work. The capital investment in the project is expected to be about $21M.
Macy’s, which closed the store in early 2014, is selling the building to Verde Fiesta I, LLC. The Fiesta Corporate Campus, expected to employ 1,300 people, is seen as a big step toward reinvigorating the 35-year-old mall on Alma School Road between Southern Avenue and the U.S. 60 freeway.
Wespac plans to start work within 90 days, said the company’s vice president, Jim Zodrow.
“It’s a great job, a great opportunity to help revitalize the area,” he said.
Site improvements and exterior building shell improvements are expected to take 18 months. Tenant improvements will take place upon leasing.
The building is 160KSF; the existing shell footprint is about 80KSF on the first level and more than 78KSF on the second level. The building exterior will be modernized, and a 2,500SF patio/break area will be added to the upper-level outdoor area.
“The property has many key features for companies considering locations in the East Valley including freeways and immediate access to hotels, restaurants and a diverse labor force,” Scott Jackson, partner in Verde Fiesta I, said in a news release.
“The building design provides a strong corporate image and the high ceilings, data services and plentiful parking will meet today’s office user needs.”
Mesa Mayor John Giles said in a news release that the reuse of Macy’s is the type of urban development city officials had in mind for the area, and Vice Mayor Dennis Kavanaugh said the reuse of Macy’s is a much needed shot in the arm for the mall.
“This project will add to the investments made by the City of Mesa and area stakeholders to strengthen the entire Fiesta District,” he said.
