IKEA Planning 348KSF Store in Glendale

By Roland Murphy for Arizona Builder’s Exchange

If all goes according to plan, West Valley fans of furniture with names featuring lots of umlauts and pictographic assembly instructions won’t have to schlep all the way to Tempe to get their fix.

Thursday morning IKEA announced it will submit plans to the City of Glendale for a 348KSF store at the SEC of Loop 101 and Bethany Home Road. Construction could begin as early as Fall of next year, with a projected opening of Spring, 2020.

The 29-acre location will offer around 1,100 parking spaces and feature the iconic building design that makes the company’s stores so easily recognizable, according to the company announcement.

IKEA features renewable energy at 90 percent of its U.S. locations, and the company says it is evaluating the potential for on-site power generation at the Glendale location.

The announcement notes the company has solar arrays at 90 percent of its locations and that it owns two wind farms in the U.S.

“We are thrilled with the reception afforded us after entering Arizona nearly 13 years ago, so we are excited about submitting plans for IKEA Glendale to extend our Phoenix-area reach,” said Lars Petersson, IKEA U.S. president. “This proposed Glendale store would complement our Phoenix-area presence established in Tempe and bring the unique family-friendly shopping experience closer to customers in the West Valley and beyond.”

The company expects the project would create more than 500 construction-related jobs, with approximately 300 staff positions created upon completion and opening.

In a phone interview with AZBEX Thursday morning, Joseph Roth, IKEA U.S. public affairs manager, said the company doesn’t use a pre-existing team for planning or construction and that the service providers would be selected after the project gets its government approvals.
