The City of Phoenix Abatement Lien Program facilitates blight elimination and redevelopment of the City’s most neglected properties. These abandoned blighted properties attract crime, reduce property values and require repeated intervention by the City to abate hazards and remove blight. The Abatement Lien Program addresses these properties through contractual abatement and judicial foreclosure. In the first two years, the programs innovative strategies have collected over $2.8M in outstanding liens, prevented the loss of over $1M in tax foreclosures, and reduced abatement costs. In addition, the program has been responsible for facilitating the renewal of 120 abandoned properties directly contributing to the reduction of blight and crime, and improving the quality of life in Phoenix neighborhoods.
We are excited to have Mailén Pankiewicz, a Project Manager for the City of Phoenix Neighborhood Services Department Abatement Lien Program, discuss the success of this program in restoring our community. During her career Mailén has worked in a variety of innovative projects such as Reinvent Phoenix here in Arizona, coastal beach erosion remediation in Romania, and recycling planning and implementation in Argentina.
Mailén was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Conservation and Environmental Science. Her love for the vibrancy, beauty and convenient transportation options of her native city prompted her to get a Master’s degree in Urban and Environmental Planning at ASU. Upon graduation she joined the City of Phoenix.
As always, this is a free event held on the first Wednesday of EVERY month. Bring your coffee or breakfast and catch up with your fellow Urban Planners and Landscape Architects.
