The State Transportation Board is being asked to approve buying the first properties in a five-mile right-of-way segment for the Loop 202 South Mountain freeway.
The three parcels slated for acquisition are within a five-mile freeway segment running from 17th Avenue to 51st Avenue north of Pecos Road. The trio of undeveloped 7.8-acre parcels are west of 27th Avenue and front Shaughnessey Road in the Ahwatukee area of Phoenix.
If the board approves the request at its Jan. 9 meeting, Arizona Department of Transportation will begin steps to purchase the property and acquire full ownership.
When acquiring land for public purposes, governments are required to pay fair market value. If voluntary sales are not consummated, ADOT would go through the condemnation process, in which a court sets the fair market value.
