Chicago expatriates, hot dog aficionados and curious lunchers can circle mid-February with gusto for the opening of Portillo’s Hot Dogs, 90th St. at E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale. Demolition crews are on the job this morning at the former Uncle Sam’s. The local chain’s northern-most eatery will disappear under the graders by November 7th and the first of four Portillo’s will break ground. The new, $1.4M Portillo’s will open around February 15th.
Designed by Jensen & Jensen, Chicago, and being built by Strategic R and R, Scottsdale, the 8.9K SF building will include a 1.4K SF basement. The Midwestern retro roadhouse design with art deco features will face the new parking areas perpendicular to Shea Blvd.
No GCs have been selected for the next three sites to be built next year. The next store is slated for the Tempe Marketplace, McClintock Rd. at Rio Salado Pkwy. Early reports said that the company was looking at a groundbreaking this year, but no information is yet available. The other locations in Chandler and either Mesa or Gilbert, have yet to be nailed down by the Chicago fast food purveyor.
